Frequently Asked Questions
  • What do the different Mental Health Professional Designations mean?

A Psychologist has earned an undergraduate (4 year) degree and a Ph. D. (Doctor of Philosophy) or Psy. D. (Doctor of Psychology) in the field of psychology after studying an additional 3 years.

A Social Worker (MSW) has earned an undergraduate (4 year degree) and a Master's Degree after studying an additional 2 years.

A Psychiatrist has earned an undergraduate (4 year degree), a M. D. degree after a 3 or more year course of study at a Medical School, and in addition has studied 3 to 4 years in Psychiatry.

The term Psychotherapist generally applies to anyone working in the mental health field. Specifically in Colorado it means someone who is a mental health worker but who does not fit in any of the other fields specified here.

  • What therapeutic methods and techniques are used in this counseling practice?

This counseling practice uses a comprehensive and integrative set of therapeutic methods tailored to each client's needs. Approaches include Positive Psychology, Traditional Talk Therapy rooted in counseling and psychology practices commonly used in the United States, and Mindfulness. The practice also draws from Eastern medicine and spiritual techniques originating in India and China, such as meditation and hypnosis. A variety of visualization methods are employed to support healing and personal growth. These include Finding Meaning in Your Life, based on Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy, as well as scientifically supported techniques like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming), EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). Additional therapeutic models used when appropriate include Gestalt Therapy and Transactional Analysis, each offering unique pathways for clients to explore and resolve emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges.

  • Can my personal faith or spiritual background be included in the therapy process?

When appropriate we may  use the insights and spiritual practices of your religious heritage such as prayer, meditation, contemplation, and reading of scriptures to help you move forward in your life.

Our clients come from a variety of Protestant, Catholic, Evangelical Christian and Jewish backgrounds. Some do not believe in God.

Rev. Tallman’s rich background, training, and experience with a wide variety of faiths enables him to understand your heritage.

  • How does Rev. Tallman's approach to integrating faith and psychology differ from that of other mental health professionals?

Rev. Tallman believes deeply in the personal, redeeming, loving God who is revealed in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament and most fully in the person of Jesus Christ. He never pushes his faith on his clients. He feels it is important for all of his clients, even atheists, to understand his belief system.

A few years ago a study by Psychology Today found that less than 20% of the mental health professionals in the United States admitted they believed in a personal God. Many of those who do believe in a personal God do NOT feel qualified or comfortable discussing the faith of their clients.

Government subsidized and other counseling centers often prohibit their mental health professionals from discussing matters of faith with their clients.

The majority of therapists do not have proper training or experience in using the faith of their clients to help them heal. This  may be part of the reason these professionals must turn to medication as the primary method of assisting their clients.
